Re:  Support The CLAIM Act

Dear Type Congressman/Congresswoman Name] :

Americans faced with a loss can find their lives turned upside down – even when the loss is covered by insurance, and especially when the loss is due to a natural or other disaster.  Consumers need their claims handled promptly, and by an adjuster qualified to assess the damage or loss, so individuals are able to collect on their claim and return life back to normal.

Unfortunately, one’s ability to get his or her claim adjusted promptly, even by phone or e-mail, can be frustrated by the patchwork of sometimes protectionist, antiquated and conflicting state licensing laws to which adjusters are currently subjected.  In addition, some of those laws provide no special provision to facilitate prompt adjusting in the wake of natural or other disasters.

To help remedy this situation, please support The Claims Licensing Advancement for Interstate Matters (CLAIM) Act.  While recognizing and respecting state oversight of insurance matters, this legislation will:

(1)  enable adjusters to handle claims more efficiently and effectively across state lines in an increasingly nationwide marketplace by spurring reciprocal licensing reforms;

(2) protect consumers by spurring states to adopt uniform licensing criteria and by creating incentives for adjusters to take a multistate exam proposed to be established by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC); and,

(3) facilitate accelerated adjusting of claims related to natural or other disasters.

The CLAIM Act represents a balanced approach.  The legislation provides incentives to speed the claims process for Americans who have sustained losses, and it bolsters consumer protections, while respecting state responsibilities.

Please co-sponsor The CLAIM Act and help bring about these needed reforms.

Regards,
